Smith Street happy hours

My first photo assignment for Brokelyn.com was to check out the happy hours at some bars on Smith Street (in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn). Lauren eagerly accompanied me as we sampled the margaritas and took in the atmosphere at Pacifico, Camp, and Zombie Hut.

Pacifico (98 Smith St) was more of a Mexican Restaurant with classy decor and ample outdoor seating. Unfortunately it was pouring rain, so we didn’t get to sit outside. The $4 margaritas sure were strong though!

Camp (179 Smith St) is a small bar that feels like a cozy log cabin. The walls are decorated with boats, deer heads, and other wildernessy items. The seating resembles logs and stumps from the woods. Plus, they have games on hand and $3 well drinks on Thursdays. But best of all is their smore platter: a big tray with hershey bars, graham crackers, and marshmallows ready to roast over a flame in the center.

Zombie Hut (273 Smith St) was perhaps the best find of the evening. All over the bar were small groups of 20-somethings playing board games over drinks. Lauren and I played some Jenga while others partook in some intense Connect Four games. Not to mention the fact that it’s a tiki bar, complete with a giant fish tank, tropical drinks with those little paper umbrellas, and beaded strings at the bathroom entryway.

Cape Cod 2009

My family had its annual week-long trip to Cape Cod last week. We stayed right on the beach at Linnell Landing in Brewster with my dad’s side of the family. The first half of the week was fraught with clouds and rain, which made for pretty crummy beach weather. Thankfully the sun came out later in the week and I was able to get in a few decent photos!

Photoshoot: Shannon & Jamie in Cape Cod

In my quest to “pursue photography” more this summer whilst [f]unemployed, I made my sisters dress up for a photoshoot on the beaches of Cape Cod (not that they took much convincing!). I have very little experience with portraiture, and they’re just so photogenic! I have to say, this experience might have been monumental in whatever may happen with my so-called photography career because it was such a success! My sisters are so picky and critical and can be divas to work with, so the fact that they were so thrilled with the shoot results was so encouraging. The 135L is an absolute dream for portraits!

Make Music New York

Lauren and I went to a bar in Bushwick to catch some bands performing for this year’s Make Music New York. Virtually every neighborhood in NYC had performances throughout the day at various venues for the event. At the Duck Duck Bar we sat front-row and watched Matthew Varvil, Of Hounds, and Roadside Graves make some enjoyable music. Then afterwards, we made our way to another venue where a certain band was supposed to be performing on the roof… only there was no one out there when we arrived! (Perhaps they wussed out because of the rain?). But it ended up being a good thing because we had our own little practice photoshoot on the roof and fire escape!

Figment 2009

This weekend marked the 3rd annual Figment arts festival on Governors Island. It is “an explosion of creative energy… an annual celebration of participatory art and culture where everything is possible… it transforms Governors Island into a large-scale collaborative artwork… and then it’s gone.” It was similar to what I imagine Burning Man to be, but on a much smaller scale (and PG-rated). Definitely an event worth checking out and taking part in!
