Christmas 2009

2009.12.26 | Posted in Personal

I went back home to CT for three days around Christmas to spend time with the family. Those three days were spent baking, watching movies, and being ridiculous. I made chocolate cream pie and coffee cake completely on my own for the first time (what an accomplishment!), and discovered the secret to my mom’s annual sweet & sour meatballs: the sauce is made out of chili sauce and grape jelly! Never would have guessed that! It’s surprisingly delicious, I swear. We also watched ‘Love Actually’ and ‘The Hangover’, two movies I love and could watch over and over (this is rare for me, someone who has probably seen less movies than 98% of the US population).

And then I chased around my cats and sisters with my camera and took lots of pictures. Shannon secretly loves the camera and steals all of my pictures for her own personal use, it’s a fact. But I allow it because she’s pretty much the perfect subject – she’s her own personal stylist, makeup artist, and hair dresser and spends an insane amount of time on her ‘look’ every day, not even just for special occasions. I may scoff at this and think it’s downright silly/impractical, but she always looks amazing and makes it so easy to take beautiful pictures. AND she’s down for crazy posing and funny faces, what more could I want?! My other sister Jamie is pretty cute and stylish herself, and I wish she’d be more willing to be my guinea pig… buuuuuuut I’ll work on her! :P

Overall, it was a good Christmas. Christmas day with my mom’s side of the family was a little weird without the grandparents (one died this summer, the other was sick and couldn’t make it), and it just didn’t feel right this year. Surprisingly the day after Christmas with my dad’s family was more enjoyable – we drank glogg (a Swedish treat: red wine + vodka + cinammon, heated) and watched our first cousin, once removed trot around the house and play with toys. He’s only 14 months old and can already walk! The best part was when he stole my blackberry and lens cap and went running around with them. Then he put my phone on a little chair and started pushing it through the house, as if delivering it to someone. We had the brilliant idea of calling my phone while he had it, except Miles kept silencing the phone as soon as it lit up and vibrated, usually before we could hear the ringtone! What toddler knows how to work a cell phone?! Seriously. It was hysterical, especially when we COULD hear ‘baba o’reilly’ go off. Then he’d grab the phone, silence it, and put it up to his ear (backwards) and say hi. Cutest damned thing I’ve ever seen! I have NEVER, EVER wanted babies… but man, seeing my little cousin almost makes me rethink that mentality. How much fun would it be to watch a little kid of your own creation run around and be so damn cute?? :)

My favorite favorite (i.e. my BFF, a term I happen to dislike) turned 25 this year. To celebrate the occasion, she held a birthday gathering at Wreck Room, our favorite neighborhood bar (not like we have many other options in Bushwick!), where we bad a mini-photoshoot in the bathrooms and enjoyed some rainbow birthday cake. Then on her actual birthday, we frolicked around Greenpoint and enjoyed the beautiful fall weather.

On the set of Gossip Girl

2009.08.26 | Posted in Celebrities

I have a confession to make: I’m absolutely FASCINATED by celebrities. I like to think of it as a healthy interest though, rather than some sort of fanaticism. I don’t get starstruck, and I don’t give a damn about meeting celebrities or getting their autographs. But somehow I just LOVE to follow their lives and be in their presence. I get a kick out of it.

One of the things I’ve been meaning to do since moving to NYC is track down celebrities. I hear about them being in the city all the time, whether it’s shopping/dining in Soho or filming for some tv show or movie… yet I’d never gotten around to doing some stalking myself. So on a pseudo-whim, and a tip from some undisclosed sources, I biked out to Chelsea to stake out the set of Gossip Girl. Apparently they were filming indoors at a building on 9th ave and 16th street, with trailers set up all along 16th. After waiting around with a few teenage girls, I took a break and popped into the Chelsea Markets for the first time (note to self: must return soon!). When I emerged and reclaimed my position, I noticed the paparazzi had staked out each corner of the intersection, each with two big-ass cameras on their shoulders. Ah, the competition!

After more waiting, the crew and extras started to emerge from the building. I braced myself for the cast members to follow suit. Shortly after, I turned toward the street and saw Leighton Meester being escorted by a bodyguard out the side door and across the street. The paparazzi and I followed them to the trailers. It was all so exciting! I’d run up ahead of them, position myself, and take a few shots before running a bit further and taking some more. Granted most of them were horribly out of focus, but it was my first time celebrity stalking! They rushed Leighton into her trailer, but then Penn Badgley stepped out of another one and all the teenyboppers were snapping away with their little p&s cameras. Did I mention how pretty he is? ;)

I then followed all the girls around the corner to 15th street, where they were setting up for a scene. They had us wait on the sidewalk on the opposite side while the crew was on the other side. I noticed the paparazzi had gone closer to the action, so I said screw it and walked right over to the set. No one really said anything to me, other than asking us to move out of the “eye line” (line of sight?) while cameras were rolling. There was one beast of a pap who kept snipping at everyone else who came near him with a camera, making it clear that he had dibs on the best spots (yeah, I’m sure) and that we didn’t know how to act in close quarters with him. Seriously?! And then one of the guys I saw earlier at the intersection at one point was like “yo new girl, step back”. Geezus!

So overall, I got a bunch of photos of Penn Badgley and Hilary Duff(!) rehearsing the scene and in-between takes. It was more difficult to get them while cameras were rolling because everyone crowded around the few spots we were allowed to stand. But I did get to witness an on-screen kiss (ooh the scandal!). I later saw like 10 variations of this shot on the websites of celebrity photo agencies with other sites referencing a so-called romance between the actors as evidenced from the kiss.

See, that’s the thing with the paparazzi – timing is everything. You need to be fast. I didn’t have time to dart home and upload my photos because I had to go to class, and consequently the other paparazzi beat me to the press. I did end up submitting some of my shots to Celebrity Splash Online though. But honestly, I would make a damn good paparazzo. I’m fast, I’m up on the news and gossip, I don’t get starstruck, I’m always out and about, I’ve got certain sources/connections, and I can be one hell of a beast when called for. The only thing is I refuse to cross the line over to hardcore stalking. I’m not going to put anyone in danger for the sake of a shot, and I’m not going to completely disrespect someone in the process either.

So am I starting a career as a paparazzo? Ehhh not quite. We’ll see what happens with these photos, and maybe I’ll stake out another shoot sometime. I WILL say that it was pretty freaking exciting, and that it was such a rush once everything was happening. So we shall see :D

I’m more a fan of candid and event photography, but I did a photoshoot for Unlock Magazine in hopes of stepping a bit out of my comfort zone. On a sweltering hot day, I took a rapper and his posse to the corner of 9th and 38th to take some shots (yes, I’m aware of how ridiculous that sounds!). I hated being limited to Midtown Manhattan with the harsh mid-day light, but at least this corner had grungey fencing and a graffitied wall to work with. I took what seemed like a thousand shots of the rapper with various posse members and models. There were costume changes galore, even a makeup artist on hand. It was all very new to me, but I wasn’t fazed by it. It was a LOT of waiting around, which I wasn’t used to but I guess doesn’t surprise me. And they were all very good with posing, so I didn’t have to give much direction.

My photos should be appearing in an issue at the end of September. Yay!

The Stoop (Fest)

2009.08.08 | Posted in Events

On yet another hot summer day in NYC, I biked down to Fort Greene Park to check out ‘The Stoop‘, a music festival celebrating the diversity in NYC:

“What makes New York City so dynamic is that, with over 8 million people, New York’s true identity is really that of the many cultures these residents represent. Every summer, NYC provides some of the best programming for all to enjoy that cuts across many of these cultures. With this in mind, F.O.K.U.S. presents The Stoop 09 hosted by PattyDukes and Rephstar of Circa ‘95 and with music by DJ Synapse on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 1:00PM in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn, NY, – a FREE arts celebration featuring bands, vocalists and artists from a range of genres. This annual community gathering brings together talented artists, community organizations, and the people of New York City in a space that serves as a physical crossroads between individuals and their unique artistic expressions.”

For me, the highlight was seeing a 12-year-old rapper and his similarly-aged dancers perform on stage. Sounds silly, but they’re really quite talented! I was also entertained by a colorful black man who was swaying around shirtless throughout the day, grooving to the music right by the stage. Oh Brooklyn, how I love you!
