Last weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Kimberly and Aaron, a lovely couple from Virginia who’ve been living in the NYC area for several years now. They actually live across the river in NJ, right around my old stomping grounds (when I used to work over there). I’m so envious of the spectacular view they must have of the NYC skyline!

But oh boy was it a cold day! I felt so bad having them cross the Brooklyn Bridge in less-than-optimal weather conditions, but they were such troopers and didn’t even seem to mind.

Of all the times I’ve traversed NYC bridges, this was my first time doing it in snow. And how much do I love when my subjects start an impromptu snowball fight? So fun! :)

Once we got off the bridge, the cold was a bit more bearable. We had a bit more fun at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, with the ground completely covered in snow. And what better way to follow up their first traverse of the Brooklyn Bridge than by experiencing the famous Grimaldi’s pizza? Sounds like a pretty perfect day to me! :)

I met Stephanie and Anthony in Central Park late one afternoon for a photoshoot and instantly liked them. They’re young, they’re fun, and they’re absolutely adorable together. They actually just moved to NYC from Florida a few months ago and were more than willing to explore the park with me. It was so much fun shooting them – they barely needed any direction and even had some ideas of their own to try out. And how gorgeous was the lighting here? We got so lucky!

Ah, I felt really bad for having them hold this pose for so long, but while I was up on the stairs taking pictures, this guy comes up to me and starts babbling about how there’s this huge hawk nearby and how if I just took this one path there, I’d be able to see it and take pictures. I didn’t want to be rude and ignore him, but I was obviously preoccupied with my subjects at hand!

This year, I had my 25th birthday planned out well in advance for the first time in ages. Normally it’s just another day, no big deal, blah blah whatever… but when my good friend Jill asked if she and her fiance could come up from Maryland to visit for a few days, plans magically fell into place. I immediately offered to do an engagement shoot for them while they were here, but with more of a documentary twist to it to capture Esrael’s first time in NYC and their experience of the city together.

We started out the day with a birthday brunch at Clinton St. Baking Co. in Soho, per my request. This place has the most amazing pancakes ever! They are so legendary that they were featured on an episode of ‘Throwdown!’ on the Food Network (which Jill told me about the night before she came to visit, and we both watched at like 1am that night, because we’re that nuts). Though their banana walnut pancakes are pretty stellar too, we both went with their classic blueberry pancakes today, topped with melted maple butter. Can you spell H-E-A-V-E-N ? And then if that weren’t enough, they surprised me afterwards with a big slice of chocolate cake. I never suspected a thing! (I’m kind of oblivious, ha)

I had decided beforehand that I wanted to do a shot with Jill’s engagement ring on the pancakes, but wasn’t sure if she’d be keen on the idea. But she’s awesome and let me go crazy with it, and didn’t even mind that I was keeping her from digging into her meal. Thank you, Jill! :) nyc photographers

When we first arrived at the cafe, we noticed a painted wall across the street with colorful dwarves and made a point to take photos by it after we ate. So much color!nyc wedding photographers

From there, we wandered around the Lower East Side, en route to Economy Candy, per Jill’s request. This girl has the most insatiable sweet tooth, it’s absolutely insane. She’s even having one of their receptions be a ‘dessert reception’, that’s how nuts she is about sweets. So it suffices to say that Jill was quite literally like a kid in a candy store here.nyc wedding photographers

Later that afternoon, we made it up to Central Park where I essentially let them have their romantic little frolicking time, interspersed with a few poses per my request. nyc photographers

Another shot I’d had in mind for awhile now was to pose in front of a moving subway train. There are so many variations on this that I want to try at future shoots!nyc wedding photographers

And then, we hit up every tourist’s dream-spot: Times Square! Being Esrael’s first time visiting NYC, he was beyond excited to see Times Square for the first time. He was just like Jill was in her candy store – just staring all around, in awe. Too cute! I love when people share my love and excitement for NYC – it’s such an amazing place, and there’s something for everyone here. I can’t imagine being anywhere else at this point in my life!brooklyn wedding photographers

All in all, it was the perfect way to spend my birthday – with some of my favorite people, doing some of my favorite things, in my favorite city. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Jill & Esrael – I can’t wait for your wedding this summer! :D

A jaunt through Greenpoint, Brooklyn

2010.01.18 | Posted in NYC

Though I’ve only lived in Greenpoint for a month, I’ve been familiar with it ever since I moved to Brooklyn two years ago. It’s pretty much synonymous with being a Polish neighborhood, though being on the fringe of Williamsburg it also has its fair share of hipsters and young people. Its establishments are equally diverse. Today, I ventured to the other side of the ‘hood to Franklin Ave and perused a few of the shops. Mostly, I just walked/biked around because it was too nice of a winter day (blue skies!) not to be outside. That’s all it usually takes to make me happy – what can I say, it’s the little things in life :)

Kelsey Fain is one of my new favorite NYC friends. We met during Fashion Week last fall, and she’s pretty awesome. Oddly enough, her photographic interests are the complete opposite of mine – she’s a studio shooter, while I prefer events. But when she invited me to be her assistant for a shoot yesterday, obviously I couldn’t say no! I rarely turn down anything photography-related, especially when it’s a great opportunity for me to learn something. It was really fun to see how she works on a shoot. Studio lighting gadgets are a bit overwhelming for a minimalist like me, but it’s also fascinating to watch so many variables at play in the making of an image. I even got to use a snoot for the first time (to light the models’ hair)!

Here are a few shots from behind-the-scenes of Kelsey’s shoot. The main focus was the hair, and the concept was Star Trek inspired.
