Portrait Photography | Lauren | Brooklyn

Lauren K. Wade is the greatest roomie and friend ever for about a million reasons. One reason: she’s always down for photoshoots. She’s my guinea pig for any photo-related technique I want to experiment with, and I appreciate it more than she knows :)

So this evening, we went down the street and I had her pose in front of some colorful graffiti when the late-afternoon lighting was at its peak. I got to play with my new 70-200mm lens, which is an absolute gem despite being huge and heavy. I am slowly getting better at directing her when she models, paying more attention to the lighting and angles to determine what flatters her best in photos.

Then once the light faded, I tried out my new Demb flip-it with the flash. I’ve been looking for some sort of diffuser/bounce card, and this product has both in one. It’s definitely more flattering light than using direct flash or a normal bounce card, and so far I’m happy with it.

Williamsburg Fashion Weekend

At the conclusion of NYC Fashion Week, Williamsburg had its own Fashion Weekend at Secret Project Robot. I have minimal interest in fashion, yet somehow I found myself in attendance (what can I say, I’m a sucker for the Brooklyn underground arts scene). The crowd was saturated with hipsters; the clothes were nothing I’d ever be caught wearing. Despite sticking out like a sore thumb, I actually enjoyed the show because it was more of a performance than a runway strut. They actually DID things while modeling the clothes. I was thoroughly enjoying the night until people started smoking in the room. Isn’t that supposed to be taboo these days?

Social Exposure benefit event

I was asked to photograph Sally Golan’s Social Exposure event last night at Gallery Bar. It was essentially a night of art, fashion, and networking. Overall, it was a great learning experience for me. I wasn’t used to being in that sort of environment, so I had to quickly acclimate and work on my schmoozing skills while also trying to get the shots I needed. It was a lot to digest at one time, but I think I handled it pretty well.

Lauren was my +1 for the event, which helped put me at ease! Little did we know she would end up starring in a performance art piece involving the mural that was created during the night!

I did not use a flash for any of these photos (mostly because of my flash phobia, but also because I didn’t want to worry about it since it was my first real shoot). Looking at some of these photos, I see that I definitely could have used it at times. I’m pretty satisfied with the results yielded by fast glass, though (prime lenses ftw!).

Also, wearing 5″ heels while shooting was one of the worst ideas I’ve had in a long time. I did not anticipate being on my feet for 5+ hours straight!

Photoshoot: Shannon & Jamie in Cape Cod

In my quest to “pursue photography” more this summer whilst [f]unemployed, I made my sisters dress up for a photoshoot on the beaches of Cape Cod (not that they took much convincing!). I have very little experience with portraiture, and they’re just so photogenic! I have to say, this experience might have been monumental in whatever may happen with my so-called photography career because it was such a success! My sisters are so picky and critical and can be divas to work with, so the fact that they were so thrilled with the shoot results was so encouraging. The 135L is an absolute dream for portraits!

Washington Coast

Our time on the Washington Coast was brief, but we did manage to spend some time at the gorgeous Ruby Beach (full of driftwood, stones, and starfish!). One of the highlights of the whole trip was our stay at the Historic Sou’wester Lodge, a kitschy trailer park in Seaview. We spend an entire day inside our 1950′s trailer just hanging out and then doing a photoshoot. So much fun!! :)

Also, it must be said that people on the WA coast love their seafood, specifically oysters.
