Pet Portraits | My new kitty!

2010.06.24 | Posted in Personal

If you know me at all, you know that I absolutely love cats. LOVE. Not quite to the point of being on the road to crazy cat ladydom, but enough that I will yell out “kitty!” whenever I see one and likely try to pet it and get it to purr. That’s probably not something to go telling the world on your blog, but cats make me happy. So does photography. And so does taking pictures of cats.

I’ve actually never had a cat of my own, but this year I decided I was finally ready to adopt one. I wasn’t going to settle for anything less than my kitty soulmate, though! I started looking at shelters and thinking of names (for awhile I was set on naming her Chubby Checkers, though I can’t remember why exactly…). The plan was to hopefully adopt one this summer, in July or August after a jam-packed month of June. But hey, you can’t always plan when you’ll find your (kitty) soulmate! Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, I learned that a friend of a friend had rescued a little tabby cat on the streets of Newark, and that she was so sweet and cute and desperately needed a home. There literally was no decision-making process, I just automatically made up my mind that I had to see her. I told myself that I’d think about it afterwards and if I wanted to take her, I’d wait a week or two until the dust started to settle in my hectic life. I also picked out a name for her before even meeting her: Chib Jr, after my family’s gorgeous tabby cat back home who’s my favorite cat of all-time.

Well, guess what happened? I went, I saw her, and I had to have her that night. We lugged her back to NYC in a cardboard box that she almost busted through at least 20 times on the train. She spent a week camping out in my bedroom while we kept her separate from my roommate’s cat and I tried to cram in her vet appointments to make sure she was healthy. She nearly escaped when she climbed out my window one day through a ripped screen while we were at work – thank god our neighbor saw her!

But oh, she’s so adorable! She purrs, she plays, she cuddles, she likes to lick my arms/hands and nibble on my hair. She often wakes me up at 5am to play (as if dragging a toy into bed at that hour is really going to get me up!). She’s the most easygoing, chill kitty I’ve ever seen. Yeah, she’s pretty much my kitty soulmate :) … and definitely worth the wait I’d say!

And with that, I present: Chib Jr!

Christmas 2009

I went back home to CT for three days around Christmas to spend time with the family. Those three days were spent baking, watching movies, and being ridiculous. I made chocolate cream pie and coffee cake completely on my own for the first time (what an accomplishment!), and discovered the secret to my mom’s annual sweet & sour meatballs: the sauce is made out of chili sauce and grape jelly! Never would have guessed that! It’s surprisingly delicious, I swear. We also watched ‘Love Actually’ and ‘The Hangover’, two movies I love and could watch over and over (this is rare for me, someone who has probably seen less movies than 98% of the US population).

And then I chased around my cats and sisters with my camera and took lots of pictures. Shannon secretly loves the camera and steals all of my pictures for her own personal use, it’s a fact. But I allow it because she’s pretty much the perfect subject – she’s her own personal stylist, makeup artist, and hair dresser and spends an insane amount of time on her ‘look’ every day, not even just for special occasions. I may scoff at this and think it’s downright silly/impractical, but she always looks amazing and makes it so easy to take beautiful pictures. AND she’s down for crazy posing and funny faces, what more could I want?! My other sister Jamie is pretty cute and stylish herself, and I wish she’d be more willing to be my guinea pig… buuuuuuut I’ll work on her! :P

Overall, it was a good Christmas. Christmas day with my mom’s side of the family was a little weird without the grandparents (one died this summer, the other was sick and couldn’t make it), and it just didn’t feel right this year. Surprisingly the day after Christmas with my dad’s family was more enjoyable – we drank glogg (a Swedish treat: red wine + vodka + cinammon, heated) and watched our first cousin, once removed trot around the house and play with toys. He’s only 14 months old and can already walk! The best part was when he stole my blackberry and lens cap and went running around with them. Then he put my phone on a little chair and started pushing it through the house, as if delivering it to someone. We had the brilliant idea of calling my phone while he had it, except Miles kept silencing the phone as soon as it lit up and vibrated, usually before we could hear the ringtone! What toddler knows how to work a cell phone?! Seriously. It was hysterical, especially when we COULD hear ‘baba o’reilly’ go off. Then he’d grab the phone, silence it, and put it up to his ear (backwards) and say hi. Cutest damned thing I’ve ever seen! I have NEVER, EVER wanted babies… but man, seeing my little cousin almost makes me rethink that mentality. How much fun would it be to watch a little kid of your own creation run around and be so damn cute?? :)

Portland, Oregon

We spent a few days in Portland in the middle of our Pacific Northwest roadtrip, where we mostly relaxed and walked/biked around the city. Washington Park was a beautiful place to hang out in, but we most enjoyed the neighborhoods east of the river (Hawthorne, Belmont) and their abundance of cafes and thrift stores. Portland isn’t all that exciting, but undoubtedly is a great place to live!
