Nicole and Vish are all sorts of awesome. I loved them pretty much the second we met; I loved them for picking a non-cliche location for our shoot; I loved them even more for wanting to find a way down onto the rocks below the fence to pose beneath the RFK bridge:

You’re probably not supposed to be down beneath the walkway, but I’m all about going the extra mile for a good photo – even if it means rule-bending or getting dirty. And I love it when I get to work with people of a similar mindset. You can’t tell, but those rocks were so slippery! And it was a wee bit chilly down by the water too, but they gladly pranced around in front of my camera without their jackets. Such troopers!

And just when I thought they couldn’t possibly get any awesomer… they broke into an impromptu snowball fight! I swear, I never ask my subjects to start such shenanigans – they’re just that awesome that they do it on their own!

But oh wait, they get even more awesome! Nicole and Vish like making faces and being goofy! Being the self-proclaimed Queen of Faces, I appreciated this immensely! Nicole did her Lady GaGa face (not pictured in this post, sadly) and Vish did the ‘Blue Steel’ (Zoolander) pose. I had to try to control my laughter so I could work my camera, but man were they funny.

Sample Wedding Album

2010.01.30 | Posted in Photo Biz

My new sample wedding album just arrived! Well, technically it was delivered yesterday, but I missed it and couldn’t wait until Monday for the redelivery, so I biked all the way to the FedEx warehouse in Queens this afternoon (it’s NYC, I don’t have a car!). This wouldn’t normally be a big deal, except it was about 20 degrees out, plus windchill. My face felt like it was gonna fall off from the cold, and my legs were battling the force of the wind, but I made it there and back alive. That’s how devoted and excited I am about my photography! :)

So I ordered a 10×10 LayFlat album with a limited edition cover from Millers. I am offering this as the standard album in my wedding packages. It’s similar to a flushmount album in that it has thick, durable pages and lays flat on a table when you’re looking through it, but is much more affordable. Check it out!

Kelsey Fain is one of my new favorite NYC friends. We met during Fashion Week last fall, and she’s pretty awesome. Oddly enough, her photographic interests are the complete opposite of mine – she’s a studio shooter, while I prefer events. But when she invited me to be her assistant for a shoot yesterday, obviously I couldn’t say no! I rarely turn down anything photography-related, especially when it’s a great opportunity for me to learn something. It was really fun to see how she works on a shoot. Studio lighting gadgets are a bit overwhelming for a minimalist like me, but it’s also fascinating to watch so many variables at play in the making of an image. I even got to use a snoot for the first time (to light the models’ hair)!

Here are a few shots from behind-the-scenes of Kelsey’s shoot. The main focus was the hair, and the concept was Star Trek inspired.

Desserts by Tawny Ong

2010.01.11 | Posted in Photo Biz

2010 marks the official start of my photography business, and as such, one of my top priorities is to develop a network of wedding vendors. I am methodically deciding which vendors to approach, based on two main criteria: 1). Their clients are the type of people I would like to work with with regards to wedding photography; and 2). They are insanely and uniquely talented, so much so that I would hire them for my own wedding.

One of my first vendor friends is Tawny Ong, who is just about the sweetest person I’ve met in NYC. Her mother is equally sweet (and undoubtedly her biggest fan), and the two of us were photographing her latest trunk show appearance like crazy! After many years in finance, Tawny switched careers and became a baker, which I can totally relate to as a previous investment bank employee-turned-photographer. She has her own take on southern comfort desserts, specializing in light yet sweet creations in the form of cupcakes, cakes, and other treats. What I really like is that she tries to minimize sugar and use organic ingredients whenever possible, which makes you feel like you’re eating healthfully rather than cheating on your diet. Even without exorbitant amounts of sugar, her desserts are so delicious and flavorful!

I got to sample several of her mini cupcakes, including red velvet, pumpkin, carrot, and devil’s food cake. They are even more delicious than they look (and seriously, how cute are they?). Check out her menu and drool! She’s done both cupcakes and cakes for weddings, but the cool thing about the mini cupcakes is that they make for great table settings or wedding favors for guests.

I’m excited to work with Tawny, and I strongly urge everyone to place an order with her. You will not be disappointed!

Christmas 2009

2009.12.26 | Posted in Personal

I went back home to CT for three days around Christmas to spend time with the family. Those three days were spent baking, watching movies, and being ridiculous. I made chocolate cream pie and coffee cake completely on my own for the first time (what an accomplishment!), and discovered the secret to my mom’s annual sweet & sour meatballs: the sauce is made out of chili sauce and grape jelly! Never would have guessed that! It’s surprisingly delicious, I swear. We also watched ‘Love Actually’ and ‘The Hangover’, two movies I love and could watch over and over (this is rare for me, someone who has probably seen less movies than 98% of the US population).

And then I chased around my cats and sisters with my camera and took lots of pictures. Shannon secretly loves the camera and steals all of my pictures for her own personal use, it’s a fact. But I allow it because she’s pretty much the perfect subject – she’s her own personal stylist, makeup artist, and hair dresser and spends an insane amount of time on her ‘look’ every day, not even just for special occasions. I may scoff at this and think it’s downright silly/impractical, but she always looks amazing and makes it so easy to take beautiful pictures. AND she’s down for crazy posing and funny faces, what more could I want?! My other sister Jamie is pretty cute and stylish herself, and I wish she’d be more willing to be my guinea pig… buuuuuuut I’ll work on her! :P

Overall, it was a good Christmas. Christmas day with my mom’s side of the family was a little weird without the grandparents (one died this summer, the other was sick and couldn’t make it), and it just didn’t feel right this year. Surprisingly the day after Christmas with my dad’s family was more enjoyable – we drank glogg (a Swedish treat: red wine + vodka + cinammon, heated) and watched our first cousin, once removed trot around the house and play with toys. He’s only 14 months old and can already walk! The best part was when he stole my blackberry and lens cap and went running around with them. Then he put my phone on a little chair and started pushing it through the house, as if delivering it to someone. We had the brilliant idea of calling my phone while he had it, except Miles kept silencing the phone as soon as it lit up and vibrated, usually before we could hear the ringtone! What toddler knows how to work a cell phone?! Seriously. It was hysterical, especially when we COULD hear ‘baba o’reilly’ go off. Then he’d grab the phone, silence it, and put it up to his ear (backwards) and say hi. Cutest damned thing I’ve ever seen! I have NEVER, EVER wanted babies… but man, seeing my little cousin almost makes me rethink that mentality. How much fun would it be to watch a little kid of your own creation run around and be so damn cute?? :)
