2010 May 30: Personal | Uncle T’s 50th Birthday Party

Last weekend I went to Connecticut for my uncle’s 50th birthday party. My family has spent their entire lives in CT, so inevitably whenever I see them they ask me a billion questions about how “life in the big city” is. I’m pretty sure I always tell them it’s awesome. My grandma still can’t get over the fact that I live in Brooklyn, buuuuuut I think she secretly loves it because that’s where my grandpa was from :D

Without further adu, here is my fabulous family. FYI – I shoot all special occasions! Not only weddings, but also birthday parties, engagement parties, bridal showers, mitzvahs, you name it – if something important is happening, I want to be there to document it! Contact me if interested!

Oh, I need to preface the next 2 shots by saying that my sisters and I are the masters at making funny faces. For real.

2010 May 19: Beautiful spring weekend spent outdoors

Wanna know how a photographer spends her weekends when she’s not out shooting a wedding, event, or portrait session? Taking pictures, of course! :) I just can’t help it! I’ve always been sort of obsessed with documenting my life. And I’m always out and about doing things and exploring NYC, so of course I’ve got my camera with me almost all the time.

This past weekend, we were graced with the most incredible weather – sunshine & 70′s – does it get any better? When the weather is good, I make an effort to be outdoors as much as possible. On Saturday, Lauren and I wandered around the East Village and got a wee bit distracted by all the gorgeous fencing on St. Marks Place. I get so entranced by all the swirls and texture. Isn’t it just gorgeous?

Then on Sunday, I got on my bike and rode down to Prospect Park, where I just layed on a hill with the sun shining on me, dozing off to the occasional shouts from the six baseball games taking place all around me. No pictures, just pure enjoyment and relaxation :) Later, I ended up on 5th Ave in Park Slope where the annual 5th Ave Street Fair was happening. Unlike most NYC street fairs that all have the same repetitive vendors, this one had much more variation to it. So I wandered the street with my big lens, shooting candid shots of strangers and ogling all the kittens that were up for adoption at one booth. I am officially on the hunt for a kitty to call my own!… but it’s not a decision to be taken lightly, so I did not give in to temptation and adopt one on the spot there. Soon enough!

But man, I love NYC. I say it all the time, yet somehow it’s not enough.

2009 Dec 31: 2009 in 10 minutes

My year-end tradition is to do a brief write-up of the past year, highlighting the important things that happened and looking forward to the new year. I used to be big into journaling back in the day, so originally it was just one big babble-fest when I ruminated. More recently, I’ve taken to list form. But this year I’m trying something different. Ever since getting my new Macbook Pro, I’ve been addicted to making videos on it! My old Macbook didn’t have this function, so it’s new to me now. But for the past month I’ve been making videos for people and just having fun with it. So then I thought heyyyyyy… why not make a 2009 video! So I did:

You know, I have a Canon 5d Mark II camera, which has a far superior HD video function… but I’m still kind of scared of it, and it’s easier to use the Macbook instead. True story!

2009 Dec 26: Christmas 2009

I went back home to CT for three days around Christmas to spend time with the family. Those three days were spent baking, watching movies, and being ridiculous. I made chocolate cream pie and coffee cake completely on my own for the first time (what an accomplishment!), and discovered the secret to my mom’s annual sweet & sour meatballs: the sauce is made out of chili sauce and grape jelly! Never would have guessed that! It’s surprisingly delicious, I swear. We also watched ‘Love Actually’ and ‘The Hangover’, two movies I love and could watch over and over (this is rare for me, someone who has probably seen less movies than 98% of the US population).

And then I chased around my cats and sisters with my camera and took lots of pictures. Shannon secretly loves the camera and steals all of my pictures for her own personal use, it’s a fact. But I allow it because she’s pretty much the perfect subject – she’s her own personal stylist, makeup artist, and hair dresser and spends an insane amount of time on her ‘look’ every day, not even just for special occasions. I may scoff at this and think it’s downright silly/impractical, but she always looks amazing and makes it so easy to take beautiful pictures. AND she’s down for crazy posing and funny faces, what more could I want?! My other sister Jamie is pretty cute and stylish herself, and I wish she’d be more willing to be my guinea pig… buuuuuuut I’ll work on her! :P

Overall, it was a good Christmas. Christmas day with my mom’s side of the family was a little weird without the grandparents (one died this summer, the other was sick and couldn’t make it), and it just didn’t feel right this year. Surprisingly the day after Christmas with my dad’s family was more enjoyable – we drank glogg (a Swedish treat: red wine + vodka + cinammon, heated) and watched our first cousin, once removed trot around the house and play with toys. He’s only 14 months old and can already walk! The best part was when he stole my blackberry and lens cap and went running around with them. Then he put my phone on a little chair and started pushing it through the house, as if delivering it to someone. We had the brilliant idea of calling my phone while he had it, except Miles kept silencing the phone as soon as it lit up and vibrated, usually before we could hear the ringtone! What toddler knows how to work a cell phone?! Seriously. It was hysterical, especially when we COULD hear ‘baba o’reilly’ go off. Then he’d grab the phone, silence it, and put it up to his ear (backwards) and say hi. Cutest damned thing I’ve ever seen! I have NEVER, EVER wanted babies… but man, seeing my little cousin almost makes me rethink that mentality. How much fun would it be to watch a little kid of your own creation run around and be so damn cute?? :)

2009 Nov 26: Thanksgiving 2009 & Jamie’s 18th Birthday

Thanksgiving is undoubtedly my favorite day of the year. I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for all the delicious food! You just can’t beat my grandma’s homemade gravy and everything it covers. Plus, there are always a million different pies and cakes for dessert. Gluttony at its finest!

Unfortunately for my little sister, Thanksgiving happened to fall on her 18th birthday this year. She’s a vegan, obviously having zero appreciation for turkey day. But it’s ok, we all (me, my sisters, and our cousin) had fun just hanging out, drinking wine, and singing songs. And taking lots of pictures, naturally :)
