Mother’s Day at Barbara’s Flowers

I got to photograph several arrangements for Mother’s Day for Barbara’s Flowers, a fantastic flower shop up in Harlem. Tara is an incredibly talented florist who prepares arrangements primarily for weddings and events. This arrangement happened to be my favorite of all the ones I shot – isn’t it gorgeous?

Marla Cielo trunk show

I kicked off the month of May at the Marla Cielo trunk show. I got a sneak peek of some of the products when I photographed them last month, but to see the whole collection on display in person was pretty awesome. Andrea Tobin is the mastermind behind the brand, creating handbags out of canvas that she paints with acrylic. I don’t know the first thing about fashion or design, but I do know that she’s got something really unique here. And that I’d very much like to adorn my apartment with her paintings (and, ok, perhaps my shoulder with her bags).

The event itself was nothing short of downright impressive. I, along with the others employed for the evening, got to dress in a Marla Cielo t-shirt. Whisk & Ladle worked the bar, Studio Feast served up some Korean tacos, and all the handbags, coin purses, and other accessories were beautifully displayed around the apartment while everyone mingled and browsed the collection. And best of all, I got to spend this glorious spring day hanging out on a patio in Manhattan, taking pictures. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Bubby’s Wedding Party & Open House

I had the pleasure of attending a wedding open house at Bubby’s this week. For those who aren’t savvy, Bubby’s is a restaurant and event space in the most fantastic NYC location, nestled between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges on the Brooklyn side in Dumbo (though they have a Manhattan location too). I can’t imagine a better view at a wedding reception, nor a better area for outdoor wedding shoots. Seriously, look at this view of the Brooklyn Bridge:

Bubby’s also knows how to put on a great event! They set up tables around both floors and selected some of Brooklyn’s most talented wedding vendors to come and display their work. It was so inspiring to talk to them all and see their fantastic products. Check them out!:

Artesanal Sweets | Natascha had the most beautiful cupcake display I’ve ever seen! I must have taken at least 100 photos of her table. Her PB&J cupcakes are to die for! And her cookies are decorated with edible glitter!

Brooklyn Rehab | Alyssa had the cutest display of crafts based on a four-season theme. She’s all about taking old, vintage, abandoned and found objects and giving new life and meaning to them. It definitely makes for some super creative wedding decorations!

New Year’s Eve 2010

For NYS 2010, Lauren and I attended the ‘Transmutation’ party by Winkel & Balktick, held in a secret warehouse in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I got us comped tickets in exchange for taking lots of photos at the event… which of course I’d be doing anyway, so that worked out rather well!

Now, it’s pretty difficult to properly explain this event to anyone who hasn’t experienced it themselves. The best way I can describe it is by saying it’s akin to Burning Man, except on a much smaller scale. Let’s just say I was probably the only sober person at the party! It was a colorful and somewhat overwhelming night, but I’m glad we went. We got to hang out in a tent full of rose petals, hula hoop in the dark, and gawk at all the ridiculous costumes. It was quite a night, that’s for sure.

FedEx Food Donation Event

I trekked up to a warehouse in the Bronx to photograph volunteers unloading a truck filled with boxes of food delivered by FedEx. The volunteers then went through all of the items and sorted them into different boxes by category. The food would then be donated to families in need for the holidays. I was amazed at how fast they went through all of the boxes, and with how much food they ended up donating. It’s always refreshing to see people doing good for the community, and even better to be a part of it yourself.

Yankees Ticker Tape Parade

Here’s a fun fact about me: I was a HUGE Yankee fan back in the day… from 1997-2001 or so. I used to watch every single game religiously. I kept track of every player’s stats in a notebook (yes, I kept a tally of homeruns and RBIs). I turned my whole family into fans. Then the fandom sort of faded as I finished high school and went away to college (where I didn’t have cable tv to watch the games).

I haven’t seriously sat down to watch a game in a long time, though I’ve been to the stadium a few times in recent years. But of course I was rooting for the Yanks in this year’s World Series and felt it was only fitting to check out their victory parade (especially since I didn’t have to work that day… or any day, ha). I’m so pissed I didn’t even get to see any of the players. I had a great spot at the very start of the parade route by Battery Park, right where the floats were turning onto Broadway. But the players didn’t join the parade til the floats got onto Broadway, so all we saw were empty floats and media floats. Grrrrr.

I tried to make the most of the morning by wandering around on the side streets and being a part of all the chaos. Papers were flying everywhere, everyone had painted faces and/or Yankee gear on, people were hanging on fences and poles to catch a view of the parade. Screaming, yelling, cheering, horn-tooting. Pure madness! Only in New York :)

Felicity Hair Salon – Opening Event

I was hired to photograph an opening party for Felicity Hair Salon, a new children’s salon in Park Slope. Unlike other salons, this one caters to kids aged 8-18 with all sorts of hair types (i.e. varying ethnicities) and aims to teach them how to maintain their hair/nails between visits. They also emphasize the whole ‘salon experience’ by providing a TV, DVDs, comfy couches, and a toy box for kids to entertain themselves while waiting. I was really impressed with the space and especially appreciated the vibrant colored walls! The event was really fun to work as well – everyone loved seeing the photos I took of them on my little LCD screen!

This gig took place the week after my apartment was burglarized, so I had nothing but a 70-200mm lens to my name (my other 3 lenses were stolen). Thankfully I was able to borrow lenses from a friend. I started out using the Nifty Fifty (50mm f/1.8) and decided 50mm was the ideal focal length to work with. I didn’t even need to change lenses during the event! It was also an experiment of sorts, where I learned that it is indeed possible to work magic with a cheapo lens (that is, if you know what you’re doing!). I’m definitely considering buying some sort of 50mm lens when I rebuild my collection (but no, not the 1.8).

The Today Show halloween special

For my first month working for Splash News, I had only done paparazzi work (i.e. shooting on set). But then they had me show up to Rockefeller Center at the crack of dawn two days in a row to shoot the Today Show halloween special. On the first day, I was one of about 15 paparazzi on set. Most of them seemed to be familiar with the setup and had started a numbered list with their names on it. We were called out by number to enter the press pit, which was a small section of risers on the side. Of course I was near the end of the list, so I ended up on the top riser, furthest away from the stage area. My view was obstructed by paparazzi heads and videocameras – not good, not good at all. But thank god for the 5d2′s live view – I was able to hold the camera above my head and get decent shots. The Today Show anchors were dressed as Star Wars characters and played a round of ‘Jedi Jeopardy’. I won’t get into my opinion of Star Wars (*cough*inserteyerollhere*cough*), but they did a cool job with the theme on set.

On halloween morning it was drizzling and substantially less people (and paparazzi) were around for the show. The ‘surprise celebrity’ turned out to be Nick Cannon, who was hosting a mock segment of ‘America’s Got Talent’, with Lester Holt dressed as Susan Boyle – pretty hilarious. Amy Roebuck played Simon Cowell. We actually had a good view of the set this time, and the anchors took time to pose for the paps.
